When we started developing our frankincense line, we spent a lot of time researching before we ever ordered a single ingredient. And the deeper we went, the more frustrated we got, because most of what is on the market is built on a misunderstanding that nobody seems to be talking about.
We use whole Royal Green Hojari frankincense resin. No essential oil. And that choice is not a branding decision. It is the only way to actually put the right compounds on your skin. Here is what I found out and why it changed everything about how we formulated these products.
Royal Green Hojari frankincense comes from Boswellia sacra trees growing in the Dhofar region of Oman. The trees are harvested for their resin tears, small crystallized droplets that are hand-sorted by grade. Royal Green Hojari is the highest grade available. It is pale green, nearly translucent, and prized for its clean lemon-pine aroma and exceptionally high resin acid content.
The name Hojari traces back to the Hajar Mountains where these trees grow. Omani frankincense has been one of the most traded substances on earth for thousands of years. The Wise Men carried it. Ancient Egyptians used it in medicine, ritual, and skincare. It was literally worth its weight.
We are not using it only for the story, though the story is something. We are using it because the science backs it up in a way that most frankincense products on shelves today simply cannot say.
The compounds that make frankincense genuinely useful for skin are called **boswellic acids**. These are a family of molecules produced by Boswellia trees and concentrated in the resin. Research has tied boswellic acids to anti-inflammatory activity, skin regeneration support, and strengthening the skin barrier.
Here is the part that stopped me cold when I first learned it: **boswellic acids are in the resin, not the essential oil.**
That is not a small footnote. It is the whole ballgame. If a frankincense skincare product is built on essential oil, it is missing the compounds that frankincense is actually known for. It smells right. It sounds right on a label. But the most studied actives are not in there.
Frankincense essential oil is made through steam distillation. Steam passes through the plant material, volatilizes the lighter aromatic compounds, and carries them through a condenser where they are captured as essential oil.
The issue is that boswellic acids are non-volatile. They are large molecular structures, too heavy to move with steam. They stay locked in the solid resin and never make it into the distilled oil. What you get in essential oil is mostly lighter monoterpene and sesquiterpene molecules. Those are the compounds responsible for the aroma. The boswellic acids are left behind.
This is why so many frankincense products smell incredible and do not deliver what people are hoping for. They are using essential oil. Essential oil does not have the resin. The resin is where the work happens.
You cannot just press resin chunks into tallow and call it done. The resin has to be properly infused so its compounds dissolve into a carrier your skin can absorb.
We source our Royal Green Hojari from one of the most respected frankincense resin suppliers out there, as it is directly imported from Oman. The resin is slowly infused into jojoba oil using a careful, low-heat process that pulls the soluble compounds out of the resin without degrading them. That infused jojoba oil then goes into our formula alongside our grass-fed and grass-finished tallow.
The frankincense in our products is not a fragrance. It is not decoration. It is actually in there, in a form your skin can use.
Grass-fed and grass-finished tallow has a fatty acid profile that closely mirrors what healthy human skin produces naturally. Oleic, palmitic, stearic acids. It absorbs deeply because your skin recognizes it. It does not just sit on the surface.
That kind of deep absorption matters when you are pairing it with resin-based frankincense compounds. You want those actives getting somewhere, not just coating the top layer. Tallow gives them a vehicle that the body understands.
That is what made this combination worth building a product line around.
Once we had the formulation right, we built out four products in the frankincense line. Two straight frankincense, two with an elevated twist we call Royal Gold.
This is the balm format, denser and more concentrated than the FLUFF. It is built for people who want serious moisture that stays put. The Royal Green Hojari resin is infused into jojoba oil and blended with our grass-fed and grass finished tallow. You get the deep nourishment of tallow, the skin-compatible absorption of jojoba, and the resin-based frankincense compounds doing their thing underneath. Good for dry skin, rough patches, and anywhere you want focused coverage. The scent is warm, slightly earthy, and clean, exactly what real frankincense resin smells like.
Same frankincense resin infusion, lighter texture. The FLUFF is whipped to a light, fluffy, cloud-like texture, so it spreads easily and sinks in fast. If you run warm or prefer something that does not feel heavy on the skin, this is the one. It works great as an everyday face and body moisturizer. The frankincense scent is just incredible. People who are new to tallow skincare tend to start here because the texture feels more familiar.
Royal Gold is where we took the frankincense line and added one more layer. This formula brings together the Royal Green Hojari frankincense resin infusion with vanilla bean, creating something that smells genuinely incredible but still delivers everything the resin-based frankincense has to offer. The vanilla is not synthetic fragrance. It is real vanilla, and it pairs with the frankincense in a way that is warm and grounding without being sweet or heavy. The scent of Royal Gold is warm and is highly favored by men. This one is for people who want the benefits of both the frankincense and vanilla with a scent profile that feels a little more special.
This one tends to get the most comments on scent. Royal Gold FLUFF combines the frankincense resin infusion and vanilla bean in the whipped format. It is airy, absorbs quickly, and leaves your skin smelling like something people are going to ask you about. If you are looking for a daily moisturizer that multitasks as a legitimate skincare product and not just a body butter with a pretty label, this is it.
There is a ton of different types of frankincense resin out there, and the grade matters beyond just purity. Boswellia sacra, the species behind Royal Green Hojari, is among the frankincense varieties with the highest boswellic acid concentration. Lower grades or different species may have less of what you are actually after.
Beyond species, Royal Green Hojari is hand-sorted for low impurities and high resin content. When you are infusing resin into oil and building a skincare formula around it, you want to start with the best material possible. Cutting corners at the sourcing stage shows up in the finished product.
We went with Royal Green Hojari because there was no good reason not to when we are searching for the best of the best of ingredients to put into our products.
If you pick up a frankincense skincare product and the ingredient label lists frankincense essential oil, you are getting the scent without the compounds that give frankincense its reputation. Boswellic acids do not survive steam distillation. They live in the resin, and the only way to get them into a topical product is to use the whole resin in an infusion process.
Our frankincense line is built on whole Royal Green Hojari resin, slow-infused into jojoba oil, and blended into our small-batch grass-fed and grass-finished beef tallow. Made in Sherman, Texas. No synthetic fragrance. No shortcuts. No essential oil standing in for the real thing.
If you are going to use frankincense, use the part that actually works.
